How NIRF Ranking is decided ?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology that has been developed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank higher educational institutions in India. The framework aims to provide reliable information to help students, parents, and other stakeholders make informed decisions about higher education institutions in India. The NIRF methodology comprises of five broad parameters, with specific weightages assigned to each parameter, as follows:

  1. Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) – This parameter assesses the quality of teaching, faculty-to-student ratio, availability of resources such as books and journals, and the use of modern technology for teaching.
  2. Research and Professional Practice (RP) – This parameter assesses the quality and quantity of research output, the number of patents filed and granted, collaborations with industry, and the number of consultancy projects.
  3. Graduation Outcomes (GO) – This parameter assesses the employability of graduates, the average salary offered to graduates, and the percentage of students who go on to pursue higher studies.
  4. Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) – This parameter assesses the diversity of the student and faculty population, the number of students from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, and the outreach activities of the institution.
  5. Perception (PR) – This parameter assesses the reputation of the institution among its peers, employers, and the general public.

Each of these parameters is further divided into sub-parameters, and institutions are evaluated based on their performance in each of these sub-parameters. The weightages assigned to each parameter and sub-parameter are based on a consultative process with stakeholders, including representatives from educational institutions, industry, and government bodies.

The data for each parameter is collected from various sources, including institutional data, third-party data sources, and surveys. The data is then processed and analyzed, and a composite score is assigned to each institution based on their performance in each parameter.

The institutions are then ranked based on their composite score, and the ranking is made public through the NIRF website. The rankings are updated every year, based on the latest data available.
